Sherborne School Boys 2nd XI vs  Clayesmore School
On: Thursday, 15 May 2025
Venue: at Home

A straight forward win today for the 2nd XI against their equivalents from Clayesmore was just reward for the progress made this season. With a team comprised of some new additions this season, it was refreshing to see some new names being successful, as well as demonstrating the depth in the current squad.

Winning the toss and, quite correctly, choosing to bat first, Jamie G mixed up the batting order and Felix G and Arthur D got off to a flyer, punishing the wayward Clayesmore bowling. Anything short or wide was jumped on by Felix, and Arthur was particularly effective against the seamers, hitting fluently off his legs. The openers put on 67 for the first wicket before Arthur holed out for 37 off just 25 balls. Jasper R continued an unlucky slump in form and departed for 4, getting a good one to nibble the outside edge to depart for 4. Debutant Casper G then joined Felix as he made his way towards 50. A few lusty blows from Casper, including a fabulous pull to the boundary saw the total past 100 and then onto 139-4 with Felix falling, unselfishly for 51, throwing the bat at everything.

With a total to defend after a lovely tea, the bowlers were soon in the wickets. Freddie B provided the control from his first set of 10 and with Will W providing some fire from the road end, Sherborne we on top from the get go. Ollie M replaced Freddie from the pavilion end and accounted for the top 3 in quick succession with his out swingers. The introduction of spin added to the Clayesmore woes with Hugo B picking up another 3 wickets, including Clayesmore's most dangerous batter, brilliantly caught by Jasper R at backward square, climbing and taking the catch one handed as he fell backwards. A quite superb piece of fielding. Ben B chipped in with a wicket with his leg breaks and Will W got a deserved scalp before Ollie M came back and mopped up the tail to finish with 5-12 and the match ball. Clayesmore subsided to 68 all out to give the seconds a dominant 71 run win.
