This was the fixture where our dream of an unbeaten season died.
Canford's 3rd team were just a bit too good - comfortable in possession and with quality players in key positions. Sherborne battled bravely to retain a semblance of parity, but, sadly, Tom W spilled a speculative shot from the edge of the area and the ball trickled over the line and into the corner.
0-1 at half-time quickly became 0-2 when we failed to a press a half-clearance from a corner, giving Canford's player ample time to pick and place his shot in the bottom corner. Canford went three up ten minutes later with a glorious sweeping move that began deep in their own half and ended with a worldie 'Top Bins' half volley from the edge of our area. We couldn't lay a touch on them.
Did Canford ease off from their position of dominance and let us back into the game? Possibly. But with the game seemingly lost Sherborne never lost their sense of fight and began to gain territorial momentum. With twelve minutes remaining Al P jinked his way through the middle and got off a shot on his weaker left foot. Their keeper should have done better but got down too slowly, the ball squirming under him and into the net. Never was the adage more true that if you hit the target something might happen. With two minutes on the clock Archie O was hacked down in the box by a clumsy challenge and converted the resulting penalty. By now Canford were clinging on, but, sadly, there was not enough time to conjure a final chance and the game slipped away.
We can't be too disappointed as Canford were the better team. But our spirit in the face of adversity was commendable, and we can take this into our remaining games, starting with Clifton on Saturday.
