Mount Kelly        147 for 8

Sherborne won by 65 runs

A first Sherborne century by Fergus O'C was the defining element of Tuesday's victory over Mount Kelly in round 1 of the National Under 17 Cup. After an opening partnership of 81 with Jordan G (41) had laid the foundations, Fergus - with good support from Sam G and JP - simply laid waste to a tiring attack, reaching his century from 90 balls, and ending with six fours and five sixes, two of them from the final two deliveries of the innings. His celebrations on reaching the landmark were heartfelt - as, indeed, was our opponent's relief that the mayhem was over!

Nonetheless, the visiting side set about its huge task with purpose, advancing to 61 in good time before the first wicket went down. However, Sherborne's spinners were then able to apply a stranglehold on the run rate and, despite some rather lethargic fielding, the Devon side was never really able to mount a serious challenge and fell well short. Marlborough or Winchester now await us in round 2.
