The Junior Colts A XV's National Cup run came to an end on The Upper on Wednesday, as they were downed by a Canford side who - on the day - were just that little bit sharper and more accurate in their play, especially in the always critical area of the breakdown.
Our visitors dominated the first half, in terms of both territory and possession and, at times, only some desperate defence limited them to their 5-0 lead. When Sherborne did get the ball, it tended to be accompanied by a significant number of hooped shirts, with the result that the boys were never really able to build their attacking game or to sustain meaningful possession. Canford, by contrast, were dynamic in the tackle area and more clinical with ball in hand, although it was hard to avoid the sense that, for all their dominance, we were still very much in the game.
That was certainly the coaches' message at the interval but the light blues' struggle to assert themselves on the contest continued as the second half progressed. There were some nice individual touches and moments, but it was really only when Canford scored their second try with ten minutes to go that the home side showed their capability. Suddenly, there was more pace in the attacks and more conviction in the decision-making, as Cyrus J rumbled over for a hugely popular score with time still on the clock. Another sustained attack followed, only to falter at the crucial moment, and the game was gone. The crowd - swelled by a good showing from the senior teams - was vocal in praising both teams, and the support was very much appreciated.
After the nadir of Marlborough, there were certainly many more positives to be found today, not least in the commitment of all the players. Jamie H had another hugely effective game, whilst Cyrus proved a real handful on the charge. Fin G continued his superlative season as, resembling a rogue giraffe on the loose, he was a constant threat in both attack and defence. In the midfield, Hector H and JP, with their mix of power, pace and game awareness, were at the heart of much that was good in the Sherborne play, and there was bravery aplenty from the back three. Sadly, for all the boys' valiant efforts, it is Canford who take their place in the fourth round for a tough trip either to Seaford or to Jonny Wilkinson's alma mater, Lord Wandsworth's College.
For the home side, the games continue to come thick and fast, as we welcome Cheltenham to Carey's on Saturday; do join us if you can.
