The Junior Colts A XV progressed to round 3 of the Under 15 National Cup on The Lower on Wednesday, overcoming the physical challenge of Priestlands in an entertaining match.
The first half was all about the pace and handling skills of the home backline. First, JP finished in the corner before Harry B went the length of the field from the resulting kick-off. JP was involved next as creator, to send Olin R over, and Sherborne had scored three tries (all converted by Teddy C) to race into a 21-0 lead with our visitors looking rather ragged. To their credit, the opposition hit back to score from close range, but two further tries, from Jack M and JP meant that we turned around with a commanding 33-7 lead.
After the interval, the strength and size of the Priestlands forwards was much more in evidence, bringing them three tries of their own from powerful driving runs. Nonetheless, the light blues remained threatening with ball in hand, as two more tries for Harry B, with the second coming from a perfectly-judged interception, ensured that we weren't too generous to our guests.
A final scoreline of 47-28 is a fair reflection of a game of contrasting styles - superbly refereed by Dorset's answer to Nigel Owens, Mr McGuire - but one in which Sherborne always had the upper hand. The backline in particular is really starting to fire and to play with real verve and ambition. Amongst the forwards, Fin G, Jamie H, Fabian S and Riyon L were particularly prominent in both attack and defence.
The next round will see us take on local rivals Canford but, before then, we welcome Seaford to Carey's on Saturday. Do join us if you can.
