Rugby football was introduced to Sherborne in 1846 and first mentioned in the School magazine in 1865. Within five years the game was booming. First fixtures were against club sides and it was not until 1893 that the School played its first match against Cheltenham.

Over the years Sherborne has produced some 20 internationals and distinguished coaches have included, Richard Sharp, Mike Davis, Phil Jones, Peter Knight, David Rosser and more recently David Scott and Don Rutherford
