Sherborne School Boys-U18A vs  Taunton School
On: Thursday, 21 Nov 2019
Venue: at Home

Win: 53-0

The Regional Final brought Sherborne School a home tie against an in-form Taunton School, who had been getting good results on their circuit this season. It was clear to see why with a number of large forwards and a scrum and fly half who looked accomplished in the warm-up.

On a wet a cold afternoon, The Upper maintained it’s integrity to provide a solid playing surface, even if the wind and rain halted some early aspirations. Taunton looked solid from the start and were looking to get their big forwards into the game with runners off 9 and 10. The Sherborne defence was superb, as it has been all season. 2 man tackles were sending their big runners backwards and the Taunton scrum and fly half had very little momentum to get the back line firing. This pressure caused errors with handling and forced kicks away to the ever waiting Sherborne attack.

Mid-way into the first half, Sherborne’s breakdown skills were starting to come to the fore with the speed of ball increasing with every tackle Taunton made. This allowed fringe runners like Carr-Smith, McLoughlin and Reynolds to get in behind the defensive line and wreak havoc on the recovering defenders. It wasn’t long before the scoreboard started to reflect this dominance and within a flash it was 25-0 and half time.

The second half saw much of the same, but the fight had gone out of the Taunton players. 20 minutes into the second half and a further 4 trys to add to the tally, the match was ended early when Sherborne reached a 50 points difference.

This result has put Sherborne into the Quarter Finals of the National Schools Cup. We have been drawn at home against the winners of KCS Wimbledon or John Fisher.
