Sherborne School 15 – 20 – Clayesmore School

Rarely since the World Cup Final has a match been more highly anticipated than this return fixture against the cream of Clayesmore School. Hopes were certainly high in the Sherborne dressing room (not that we have a dressing room) before kick-off that a famous (indeed first) victory of the season could be in the bag. And truth be told, the boys made a superb and dream start with Peter H out-thinking and out-pacing the opposition defence to open our account within the first few moments. If you thought this state of affairs transported us to dreamland, you can only imagine the universal joy when a few minutes later Charlie W powered across the line to double the advantage. No conversions were possible in the difficult conditions. And then, with Clayesmore growing in confidence all the time and some of their powerful forwards beginning to come into their own, we were rather rocked back on our heels as the aforementioned forwards went cruising the full length of the pitch and within a matter of moments the deficit was halved. A grim sense of déjà vu could easily have set in but the boys in light blue redoubled their efforts and the mercurial Peter H soon restored the ten-point advantage with an excellent score. After a yet another encouraging half-time talk it was apparent that Clayesmore intended to employ its big guns to the fullest advantage. And so it was that despite brave, often three-man tackles, they were able to run in three unanswered tries in the second half. The lads were not despondent however and in the post-match huddle rightly congratulated each other on a phenomenal performance. It was a joy to watch.
