Match Report
Sherborne School Boys-U14A vs  Clayesmore School
On: Thursday, 23 Jan 2020
Venue: at Home

This was a hard fought encounter between two evenly matched teams, settled in the dying minutes by the odd goal in seven. The Mini Colts had the best of the early exchanges but went a goal behind as a result of one of many runs by the Clayesmore centre midfield, who we were unable to shut down all game. Sherborne hit back through an attack down the left, with Archie W putting the ball across goal for Will N to smash into the net first time. Spirits were buoyed but Sherborne were unable to stamp their authority on the game, despite Alfie S again looking threatening down the right. Two goals from Archie W kept the home team in the hunt but, with forwards coming back to get the ball, Clayesmore were not stretched enough to make space. In contrast, Clayesmore were provided with space in attack by defenders dropping off and with possession constantly given back to them. Some desperate defending, with Sam F putting his body on the line, was necessary to keep them out. As both sides pushed for the winner a last ditch challenge in front of goal was correctly adjudged to be foul play and a penalty flick awarded, converted confidently by the opposition’s excellent centre midfield. This only sought to heighten Sherborne’s drive and determination but they were unable to find the equaliser. Despite results so far, the squad remains highly positive and motivated. There is much that can be improved and watching them make these improvements over the next few weeks will be rewarding.

Scorers: Will N, Archie W (2)
