U15 A Rugby v Clifton

Lost 12-5

The Sherborne A XV put up a great fight in what could be described as a typically November style game of rugby v Clifton College. Conditions were cold and wet so territory and game management were key and with that in mind the Sherborne side went into the match with a clear game plan to gain territory and put pressure on Clifton in their own third. Sherborne executed some excellent kicks from the boots of Marriage and Westmacott, which, on another day, may have caused some real problems for an opposition. Unfortunately, the Clifton back three played outstandingly, led by their full back. They consistently scooped up difficult balls and managed to either run or kick out of trouble. With ball in hand Clifton were a bit stronger and more dominant than the Sherborne boys but that did not mean the Sherborne defence would be easy to break down. Tackles got lower and more effective and double man tackles – which were practiced this week – were become more regular and effective. Clifton broke the deadlock just before half time off a quick line out to lead 5-0 at the interval.

The second half played out similarly with Sherborne looking more threatening with each passing minute and phase, although unable to break through until 5 minutes from the end of the match, bringing the game to 12-5 with minutes to play. Sherborne switched tactics and kept the ball in hand, piecing together some well executed runs but it was not quite enough. A little too late, perhaps. Nonetheless, a good performance and a fantastic approach which showed a lot of patience and resilience.
