Match Report
Sherborne School Boys-U18B vs  Millfield School
On: Saturday, 12 Oct 2019
Venue: Away

The 2nd XV's unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday as they went down to a heavy defeat to an excellent Millfield side, who would give plenty of 1st XVs a run for their money.

For much of the first half, the two teams were fairly well-matched, especially up front, and a 7-17 deficit after Tom Pettifer had continued his scoring streak was a fair reflection of the game as half term approached. However, Millfield scored two tries in quick succession just as the whistle beckoned, and Sherborne turned round to play up the slope 20 points adrift and also having to absorb the loss of the influential Henry Marriage to the 1st XV. The second half was a punishing lesson in outstanding finishing with the Millfield backs attacking from anywhere with great pace and skill. Our forwards - with Michael Heyman, Toby Jones and Roly Newman particularly prominent - continued to compete manfully and there were some sustained periods of light blue pressure, but any errors were ruthlessly pounced upon and six further Millfield tries resulted. Nonetheless, many of the boys showed up well, notably Raef O'Brien, Charlie Wills and Frey Hopkinson but, on the day, the result in no way flattered our opponents: for a neutral watcher, their handling, ambition and sheer speed of thought and deed would have been a joy to watch...less so for the visiting coach and spectators!

So, a tough day at the office, but the team has an early opportunity to get the season back on track with the visit of Clayesmore's 1st XV to The Upper on Thursday.

Man of the Match: Toby Jones - always to be found where the action was thickest and refused to take a backward step all day.

Try: Pettifer

Conversion: O'Brien
