On: Saturday, 12 Oct 2019
Venue: Away

1st XV v Millfield School

The 1st XV travelled the short distance to Street to face what would be their toughest test of the season in Millfield School. After a bruising mid-week game versus QEH, the boys had recovered the best they could to be fit to play the match.

The game started well with the pack looking in dominant form, especially with their driving maul. It was from this area of the game that Sherborne produced their first of three tries. Charlie M drilled the ball into the opposition five metre area from a penalty and the forwards set out to drive their way over the Millfield line. Lorcan M was the Sherborne player to emerge with the ball.

Millfield then kicked off and Sam R rose highest to take the ball, but was taken out in the air by the chasing Millfield player. Just a penalty, but Charlie put us back into the Millfield territory. Millfield then capitalised on a Sherborne error, picking the ball up from a knock on and moved the ball to the wide channels. Their talented midfield kick chaser beat 2 men to bring Millfield back to 7-5.

The rest of the first half brought about some fantastic school boy rugby with both teams testing each other’s defence without much give. It was Sherborne, however, who scored the next try. Tom C-S fed Lorcan M on a ‘Gregan’ line back inside for him to break the line. Tom supported well to receive the two v one against the fullback to go over, 7-10. Sherborne should have extended their lead shortly after. Another dominant lineout drive was marching it’s way to the try line before a Millfield player illegally dragged it down, penalty only and more frustration for the Sherborne players. Millfield then hit back with a penalty to tie up the scores at 10-10. With time coming to an end of the first half, the coaches were readying their team talk on what was a positive first half. However, the referee must have stopped his watch and forgot to start it again because we then went on to play an extra twenty minutes of the first half. Millfield scored another penalty in the 50th minute of the first half to take them to 13-10. Finally, after 55 minutes of play, the half came to a close.

Sherborne came out in the second half a little tired, but keen to pick up from where they left off. Unfortunately, Sherborne then made another mistake in their own territory that Millfield pounced on to score. 18-10. What seemed like seconds later, our players were under their posts again with Millfield scoring an individual try to take the score to 28-10. This spell of 10 minutes took Sherborne by surprise, but knew they had what it takes to get back in the game. They responded superbly, playing to their strengths and making headway up the field. Another driving maul resulted in Freddie W going over in the corner, converted by Charlie M to make the score 28-17. Sherborne spent the last 10 minutes in the Millfield 22 with penalty after penalty allowing them to set up their favoured driving maul and it was only a matter of time before they scored or were awarded a penalty try. Neither happened. A Millfield player then received a yellow card for repeated infringements with 1 minute to go, but it was too late. Millfield held out and finished the victors.
