Marlborough U14E 36 Mini Colts E 7

It is wonderful how well-supported Sherborne's junior sides are and the small gathering on the terraces at Marlborough this Saturday included, as ever, a hardy bunch of parents and relatives who, undeterred by the presence of Bear Grylls on pitchside nearby, turned out to watch the Mini Colts E side in action. They were not disappointed. As one parent pointed out, this was "real rugby", a step up from prep school fare and with few missed tackles. Captain Oscar Revell, in his new position as fly-half, led by example with some jinking runs, Francis Keeping was a colossus in the scrum and Charlie Temmink seemed to appear everywhere, even adding an impressive conversion which, hit low and hard, clipped the crossbar on its way over. Sherborne took the lead ten minutes in, when Max Windham set off, kept going, was stopped but kept going, was held up but kept going, slipped a tackle or two, kept going and eventually, with two defenders clinging on for sheer life, plunged over the line. The star man, though, was Rudi Beard who, playing at prop, masterminded the scrum, held his ground and played his heart out.

Try: Max Windham

Conversion: Charlie Temmink

Man of the Match: Rudi Beard
