Match Report
Sherborne School Boys-U15A vs  Marlborough College
On: Saturday, 28 Sep 2019
Venue: at Home

The JCA XV came up against a very well drilled, structured and composed Marlborough side on Pitch 1 on Saturday. It was those attributes that were to define the match in the course of the first half.

From the kick-off the Sherborne side were frustratingly disorganised, failing to organise their defensive structure which led to missed tackles and lost ground. It took just 4 minutes for Marlborough to open their account and they looked like a hard side to stop with their clear, simple and clinical attack. There were moments where the Sherborne side looked to gain some momentum but they were unfortunately short lived due to handling errors in rather chaotic attempts of attack. Under immense pressure a few penalties were also conceded which gave Marlborough even more advantages. They continued to be clinical in their attacks and scored 3 more times in the first half, taking the score to 0-24 at half time.

The half time chat focussed on the week’s training, where we focussed on structure for a simple attack that had multiple options, communication to ensure the players knew what was meant to be happening rather than just reacting to the previous players (sometimes seemingly random) decisions, and finally, discipline.

After re-focussing and a chance to calm themselves the Sherborne side came out like a different side altogether. The structure was much improved, both in attack and defence, as was the communication and discipline. In a well-balanced half the game was fantastic for a neutral supporter. Marlborough managed to score and then hold off the home side but the Sherborne boys felt they were edging ever closer. It took several attempts in the Marlborough 22 to finally get the breakthrough. Freddie Springett took a quick penalty 5m out and broke through to the line to score a try on the stroke of full time.

The Sherborne boys will hopefully learn a lot from their tale of two halves. With their first cup round on Wednesday v Downside I hope the well-structured and organised team will show up for the entire match.
