Junior Colts B 50 The Gryphon A 22

We conceded a try after a minute – so much for the slick warm up session. Make your first tackle and all will be well. The beautiful weather indicated a day for running rugby and within a minute we had replied with a powerful run from Tom Trickey. After the Gryphon had retaken the lead with a penalty we started to play and slick handling and better rucking from the forwards allowed us to score three unanswered tries, two from the powerful running of Freddie Springett. It was 31-13 at half time as we had leaked another try and the half time talk was all about not conceding in the second half.

Perhaps there should also have been a message about catching the ball as we squandered several opportunities (in perfect handling weather) by standing in front of the ball carrier or throwing it behind the receiver. Nonetheless we did manage to score three more tries in the second half as Henry Kingsbury rediscovered the rampaging gene of last Saturday bouncing one poor Gryphon boy, Lomu-like before scoring in the corner. The game did become a bit scrappy and we lost a bit of discipline again, something it is vital we don’t do in closer games. The Gryphon put up a decent fight, but we made the most of the fact that although they had some decent players they also had a few without much rugby experience. The boys also coped well with multiple position changes by the coach, a useful exercise for their rugby development, although it didn’t help continuity. Eventually Mr McGuire had had enough once he heard we had reached 50. Marlborough next week will be tougher but we are already developing a good team spirit.
