Mini Colt Bs, Sherborne 49 – Bishop Wordsworth’s 19

The rugby started typically for the Mini Colts, with everyone being introduced to each other shortly before the match and trying to remember everyone else’s name. After the assiduous tactical planning of the night before it came as something of a surprise to hear that Bishop’s had only brought twelve players…..hang on, eleven. We made some swift decisions and decided to play with no flankers or full back and only one wing.

From the start we played like a cohesive team. The support play was good and we played with urgency and determination. We quickly scored an opening try, courtesy of Haitian Li and then another through Archie Wolsely Brinton. However Bishop’s came back strongly and through their two biggest players they levelled the scores at the end of the first third.

A quick talk and some tactical changes later and Sherborne started playing the best rugby of the match. We tackled well, broke their defensive line consistently and made some excellent off-loads. We scored a couple of great tries that would have looked good on the First XV pitch and through tries from Alfie, Ollie P, Archie, Robert and Angus we put the game to bed. The final session was played with the condition that no one on our team could run more than ten metres with the ball, and we still scored and made most of our tackles.

This was a very encouraging start to the season, particularly the way the team coalesced and helped each other out. Next week will be a much sterner test, and our tackling could certainly improve, but this is a good rock to build on.

A pleasing start to the year but much to work on. Final score of 30-0 to Sherborne.
