The 1st XV got their season underway with their annual fixture versus Bishop Wordsworth’s School. Following a positive tour to South Africa in July, and a pre-season festival at Kingswood, it was a well prepared side, but nerves would have still been high for a number of debutants. The visit of some Old Shirbirnians also ramped up the anxiety levels and the first half reflected this. A combination of unforced errors and a high penalty count meant the Sherborne side struggled to get any kind of momentum and to convert lots of pressure into points. The first points didn’t come until the 30th minute when Charlie M slotted a penalty after another period of sustained pressure in the BWS 22. Toby W scored on the brink of half time to make the half time team talk a little easier for the coaches. Tom C-S kicked a delicate box kick which bounced fortuitously for Toby to collect above his head run in.

The focus for the second half was to reduce the errors and convert more our chances convincingly. The Sherborne side responded with tries from Tom C-S and Christian J to take the game away from BWS. CJ’s try was the highlight and an early contender for try if the season; starting in the Sherborne 22, the team kept the ball alive with a number of offloads and silky passes, involving a number of players, to finish an 80m attempt. Tom’s first try came after a quick penalty 5 meters out from the line. Tom was too quick for the defence to react and he scored with ease. Tom got a second in the last play of the game with an interception try. Off a BWS lineout, Tom picked off the scrum half’s pass and ran the ball in from the half way line. A 29-3 victory, over a strong school, is a good start to the season. Radley at home will pose another tough threat.
