Sherborne MCBs 0 Radley 65

What a contrast to last week’s game. If there was ever a warning about the dangers of complacency this was it. From the start of the match Radley played with purpose and intensity and put Sherborne on the back foot. We found it hard to get the ball back and when we did have the ball, the pressure they put us under made it difficult for us to use it with intelligence and purpose. Our heads went down and, unforgivably, we start having a go at each other. At the end of the first half we were 45-0 down and the match was in danger of being called off.

Slowly however we fought our way back into the match. Max Dangerfield took control of the backs and sent over a couple of intelligent kicks that made us a lot of ground. Our defence solidified so that when they scored they had to go the long way round. Our scrum performed really well and was a bright part of the game for us. Our composure returned to some degree and the in-fighting died down.

This was a real lesson for us and one that we will have to learn quickly. Radley demonstrated how potent team spirit and organisation can be. We will need to improve these elements of our play, along with some of our core skills before we meet other well-organised teams like Marlborough and Abingdon.
