Match Report
Sherborne School Boys-U16B vs  Radley College
On: Saturday, 14 Sep 2019
Venue: Away

Won: 25-24

MOTM: Lucas Gardner

The Colts B's followed up a resounding victory over Bishop's last weekend with an outstanding performance away to Radley College on a scorching Saturday afternoon. Pre-match preparations were far from perfect, with a delayed 3 and half hour coach journey up to Oxfordshire pushing kick off back by 15 minutes. Nonetheless, Sherborne flew out of the traps with some strong running from Lucas Gardner, however, it was Radley who were first on the scoreboard with an early try against the run of play. Undeterred, the boys rallied and soon hit back, some wonderful flowing play leading to the pacey Harry Whigham crossing in the corner to level the scores.

Despite the testing conditions, the boys pushed on all afternoon and brought the scoreline to a 22-12 lead midway through the second half. At this point, Sherborne were awarded a penalty on the opposition 22, slightly to the right-hand side of the uprights. Captain Tom Rotheroe decided to go for goal and duly stepped up himself, converting the kick to extend Sherborne's lead to 25-12. Little did the animated crowd know at this point how important a moment that kick was going to be.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Sherborne, now down to 14 men following numerous injuries and cramps, remained 25-12 ahead. Two quickfire tries by Radley left their kicker with an opportunity from the touchline to take the lead with only 2 minutes left to play. Fortunately, his effort did not make it over the posts and just a few minutes later the Sherborne boys scrambled the boy out of play following an attacking scrum in the Radley half and secured a hard-earned victory. A brilliant performance all round from the boys with some flowing rugby in attack coupled with a stern defensive effort, still with room for improvement particular at set-pieces, much optimism can be carried forward.
