Match Report
Sherborne School Boys-U18A vs  LTA Tournament Sherborne School
On: Sunday, 13 Oct 2019
Venue: at Home

The recent challenging weather caused some alterations to the whole Sunday Grade 4 / 5 tennis event. With the prospect of the rain clearing, matches were scheduled from 12 noon on Sunday. Sherborne's Nick Morris and Euan Jardine were the first to arrive at Sherborne Girls to warm up- with six hours of tournament tennis extending thereafter to the western sunset.

Gradually competitors from many areas arrived for 18/U boys / girls and 16/U girls events, including one from Millfield in a taxi who was dropped at the wrong venue and needing collecting. In the 18/U, Nick Morris found a first round lifeline after a difficult first set, levelling at 0-4 4-2. The match tie break was a roller coaster with Nick's opponent saving 4 match points- resulting in a 9-11 final set loss. Next on court, Euan Jardine played a controlled match to defeat his opponent from Milton Abbey in straight sets to reach the quarter final. Both Sherborne boys gave much supportive encouragement to each other during matches and were visited by friendly Sherborne boys and girls. Euan continued to dazzle in reaching a first set tie break against the number two seed. Unfortunately a double fault allowed the set to slip away. However, it did further mark a broader reach of standard for him. Nick played solidly again winning in three sets to make the consolation final. Maybe at a cost in the end, as he tired in his final match.

It was a very positive event day, with other age groups contested at Martock Tennis Club supported by referee David Kirkman. The visiting players and families enjoyed the event at Sherborne Girls refereed by Chris Penny. Access to the Merritt Centre for rest and relaxation with families was a great addition this time. Our thanks to Jayne, The Coffee Pod and everyone at Sherborne Girls for offering us the facilities and making us feel welcome. Also John at Sherborne Grounds for the leaf blower, Martock Tennis Club, A Touch of Glass for the trophies, and Sherborne catering for the beverages and biscuits which were both as ever, a big hit at our school tennis event!
